Silver tassel clasp. From an Armenian workshop, Artvin-Oltu region, circa 1900. The silver filigree work is gilt, and set with small turquoises; the silk tassel is attached to a felt woman’s hat by a string of blue glass pearls. (Inv.nr. ba$023 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).

  • 2506042590?profile=originalTo ingrid: yes and no...  Women's caps (often felt) can be called 'fes' (and have many other local names too).  But (as far as I know) the expression 'Turkish fez' refers to the characteristic men's headgear of the late-Ottoman era, when the urban middle- and high class adopted Western clothing, and kept this specific Ottoman headgear as bond with the Ottoman past and culture.  See the picture added.  Best greetings, JMC.
