Silver coptic crosses

This is another set of silver coptic crosses bought in Egypt some 25 years ago. I do not think that they are much older than that. The silver brooch was also bought at that time and represents typical Nubian houses in Upper Egypt.

  • Wonderful collection, arrangement, and photograph. I particularly like the Nubian house brooch.

  • Thanks a lot, Toya.

  • I agree with Toya, beautiful crosses, you say they are general coptic crosses? I did not know, I thought they were particularly Ethiopian. But nice to know.  I like them all, and also especially the little Nubian house brooch!

  • Well yes, Eva. That is what they told you. I agree with you though that they strongly remind me of Ethiopian ones ....

  • Hi Jose, A nice display. But I have to confirm like Eva that these are Ethiopian crosses. Not all coptic, two are catholic.  Egyptians liked the Ethiopian crosses and ordered them for their own market.  The age you gave them is correct could be also older of about 1968. That is when I saw them made in Addis by the town jewellers. These are mostly sawn out of a plate of silver with a blue print on it. 4 pcs, the are done with the lost wax system, that means molded (the Axum crosses). Gr. Ingrid.

  • Such an interesting   variety. The little brooch is so sweet.
