  • I wonder wether you are still visiting the Surabay street market in jakarta? have you met with the dealer with the most of jewels?

There is a mostly silverware gallery selling some nice old jewels near the backpacker neighbourhood that you may want to have a look at. It is a nice place, let me know if you have not found it yet!

Would you say that this bracelet is old or pretty newly made, i was under the impression that many are still made!

  • I would say that it is “vintage” since there appear to be some worn areas.  But it is not necessarily ancient.  I already had one of these that I bought at about half the price.  I think this one has slightly more silver content (although still low grade), and the work on this example was more detailed than the first one I purchased.  The seller, of course, tried to tell me that it was ancient, but they will all say such things even if it came off a Chinese assembly line a few hours before. I am more interested in authenticity and workmanship, so I wasn’t put off...but still talked him down to half his original asking price.  (I think it was a fair price.)

i have met one dealer on Surabaya who has better stuff, but his prices are still higher than I would like, and there is always some flaw to an otherwise good piece in his case.  (For example, the best belt buckles are always missing the back piece that attaches to the belt.). I have also found a few antique stores out in Ciputat, but they are hit or miss.  If you can give me some additional tips, I would be most grateful!
