Pendant - Abania

Silver pendant for catolic women, used during Ottoman times, for lighting (firing) of cigaretes or pipes.When a group of men in a patriarchal family would meet and relax in a majlis type of room, the young lady would take a piece of fire (this is what the scissor type of fixture is for) and go to everybody to give them fire for pipes. This was practiced in the Shkodra mountains.This is an extraordinary piece!Special note must be mentioned for the centerpiece (close-up photo below), which is gilded silver with painted flowers, protected by a curved glass, mounted onto the design - very special and extremely rare.

    Dear Betty; Well, sometimes, I am surprised myself. I always try to go direct to the source, in this case a family in Albania. My contacts in Albania can also furnish me with details on how, by whom and where the jewelry was worn. These pieces are extremely fragile and many have been repaired over time, etc.. I love repairs on jewelry as it gives them character and shows that they were actually worn by working people. However, it also means that it is very difficult to find good pieces. I keep on searching... With kind regards. Peter

    Beautiful piece! Probably part of the assemble of Xhubleta worn by Albanian highlanders. The 'scissors' is renovated/changed.
