Ivory Coast, Baule.Dignitary necklace of solar symbolism, consisting of bronze beads, buttons import beads, bronze rings, 9 bone pendants carved in the form of teeth, all mounted on a string of plant fibers interwoven and held by two elements bronze geometric decoration.

An excellent piece. I am always pleased to see great pieces made to a significant extent of natural materials, which in several places on earth were until recently the only known ones with which to make jewellery. That is why the first two chapters of my wife Truus Daalder's book *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*, on Australia and Oceania, show jewellery predominantly made as though in the stone age, using no metals, metallic tools, etc. And the level of artistry achieved - surely, together with the symbolic meanings, the main thing - is often extremely high. This piece uses metal as well, in a most attractive combination.
