An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

Another item for sale at the local tourist shop, a mamuli from Sumba. This mamuli is made from brass/copper sheet and was no more than 2 inches long. This item was likely made for the tourist market and was priced at 750,000 IDR.

The mamuli can be used as either a pendant or an earring. It represents the female genitalia. Large ones are traditionally given as offerings of marriage, and are kept as house treasures. The mamuli acts as a talisman and the offering to the bride's parents is meant to restore balance to the house. It is believed that taking the bride from the parent's house can create imbalance.
