Macedonian/Albanian belt

Although apparently collected in Macedonia, there is a good chance that this belt was actually made in Albania, to be used by an officer who belonged to the "Arnauten", i.e. army personnel from Albania widely active in countries which formed part of the Ottoman empire. It is certainly well used and of early manufacture. It is studded with many excellent cornelians, further made mostly of a very thick, beautifully patinated leather, and either brass or bronze. Bought too late for inclusion in *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*.

    This is an excellent example and I love the buckle. I had one like this also that I purchased in Brussels and sold two days later at the Olympia fair. I never got a photo of it. But I will post the one i kept as it is very similar to yours only it has inlaid shell in it which i had not seen before.  I love these belts!

    Yes, we are obviously among the real enthusiasts, and this is also one of Truus's favourite objects in our ethnic jewellery collection. I was stunned to see how positive the reaction was on Facebook, all the same. Encouraged by what you say, I shall actually post the other two images I have as well!

    Did you see the buckle I posted which i think came from a similar belt to the one you have on face book as Hungarian.  I had it and never knew what it was, so now that mystery was solved!
