  • This is an amazing price Joost.  I have just bought the book and look forward to many hours spent reading and admiring.  :)

  • Many thanks indeed, Lynn, from both Truus and me, both for the kind words and the kind action! And we do hope you will enjoy the book. I just got a message from a supporter who said she had had the book for some years and had originally bought it, as many do, for the pictures and the captions, but had now actually read the book cover to cover, as few do, and had found the experience wonderful. That is just such a gratifying response, because Truus spent so much time on research, and I had the painful task of supervising my wife's work with just as much severity as the work of a student - not the most delightful situation for either of us, but we survived, and the result appears to be universally liked. Not that the book is perfect; in retrospect there are of course always things you find you should have done differently. But that is to be expected, and it is widely felt, by owners, that it is "a book for life". Anyway, thanks heaps!

  • At these new prices the book is finding ready buyers, both inside Australia (at AUD 85) and outside it (at AUD 140), including transport in both cases. We are grateful to all, and hope to sell many more copies! If any people are interested in buying three or more copies, either for themselves or to sell, please ask Truus for a quote at her website, www.ethnicartpress.com.au, where you can also order a single copy.

  • It arrived at lightning speed and I am slowly digesting this magnificent book.   Things I love:

    • The taste level of the objects presented.  There are unusual and rare objects of cultural value and great beauty in this book, that are not presented elsewhere.  I love the books that feature the Ghysels collection because of the very consistent quality of the selected objects.  This, I feel presents more unusual and extraordinary choices.
    • The wonderful descriptions of each culture, and the value and use of adornment in each culture.  I am learning a lot!
    • Since it was written by a collector, it also contains wisdom and advice for collectors which books written by curators or anthropologists do not have.  One of the pieces of advice which I appreciate is the importance of buying when a group of cultural objects become available because they may be exhausted from the source and not available again.  (I wonder if Bulgarian jewelry fits this description?)
    • And finally, the high art value of the book!

The book is magnificent and I can tell I will be spending a lot of time with it.  Thank you Truus and Joost.

  • Thank you so much for your kind comments, Lynn. Your observations are exceptional in that they reveal very exactly just what Truus hoped to achieve in her hard work, and what clearly in your view she succeeded in achieving. I feel that you describe particularly well how her book differs from others. It is most gratifying to read this reaction!
