  • Dear Angela; WOW, you got lucky! This is a beautiful museum piece. I have a similar piece - they are quite rare. The principle is quite simple. All jewelry items in possession are stitched onto this front piece, which is a great way of safekeeping. Congratulations! Peter
  • Very interesting. Must have a long story to tell.  And weighs a ton of course, Well done. That must have been the original owner life time savings.

  • Apart from this being such a rare find, Angela, it#s quite fascinating that you found in South East Asia!

What a journey for such a rather unusual item... Anyway, I can only join the praises, it's a fabulous piece.

  • Wonderful piece. I agree with others here, the personal aspect such pieces convey gives a whole new dimension to any ethnic jewelry

I have posted your piece under one discussion regarding a mysterious choker/necklace and it seems that your veil has got many of this necklace's pendant attached to it which may mean the mysterious choker is yemeni!

    Good find

  • Hello, Angela. Awesome piece. There are some examples, though not as richly decorated as yours, in "Reines de Saba. Itinéraires textiles au Yémen" (Edisud 2003, ISBN 2-7449-0433-3). Those shown in this book are described as coming from North Yemen. This technique seems to be also used in some other areas in Yemen to decorate wedding hoods ("asba") and veils ("bouryaa").

  • Astounding ornament!!  Thank you so much for sharing the photo.  You are very lucky to have it.

I agree with Alaa, some of the round pendants with filigree look like the mysterious choker's pendants.
