Bali Earrings

These are new earrings made in Bali. I thought they were interesting since they have thin wire posts, but the posts have a sheath that imitates the traditional ear plugs. 925 silver with gold wash.

  • So, I think that similar earrings would have traditionally had a thicker shaft. The piercing on the ear lobe would be fairly large to accommodate such an ornament.
  • very beautiful Edith! I just love them, what a brilliant idea & also a good way to avoid body modification!! kind regards, zhanna

  • Clever and beautiful!

  • Thanks!  Although I prefer the vintage jewelry, I am always pleased to support current artists, especially when they are trying to keep traditional forms alive.  And I can actually wear these!

Here is an old photo of a Balinese dancer wearing the plug-type earrings...

  • Great picture, thanks for sharing, Edith.

I feel the same: I love the wear on old jewelry and the idea that it has a history; but I also try to buy some newly traditional-style pieces. If we don't support the artists who make them, this wonderful handicraft will eventually disappear ...

  • hello edith & betty, I'm of the same position, vintage & antique is wonderful, however wherever traditional art forms have survived or are being revived they must be encouraged & supported, particularly in fair trade mechanisms, NOVICA is a great fair trade site brought about by national geographic, I recommend this with caution as I havent looked there for a good while, but when I did they had good traditional style jewellery newly made from all over the world, one does have to look though the non interesting items of course,

you are both right the techniques will die out if the artists/artisans are not supported, kind regards, zhanna
