  • Yes, the hallmarks are often incorporated into the design on the front of the piece.  The initial hallmarks like these (these are Arabic letters) tend to be older pieces.  Sometimes the only hallmark one finds is a punchmark which a lot of people refer to as the "tete de negre."  I also have pieces in good silver that have no visible hallmark!

  • These can be Tunisian or Libyan. Most of them are missing the pin part that fastens the fibula to the cloth. Sometimes the pin can cost almost as much as the crescent. Very often the designs on the fibula or of fish or birds, particularly if Tunisien. They are fairly rare to find although a few have been popping up more lately. It is difficult to find a matched pair. Usually the silver in these is relatively purel.
