THE SIGN OF TANITDetail of mosaic floor with the sign of Tanit and silver pendants in the form of Tanit. Tanit was an ancient berber god, adopted by the Phoenicians when they founded Carthage. On the floor of the punic site of Kerkouane, the goddes is represented by a triangle with a horizontal line and a circle on top. Over the centuries this symbol was repeaded in embroidery, carpets, ceramics, tattoos and pendants, now very rare, which were taken as protection because it was believed that this symbol would take away the jinn. Looking at them you can see the evolution of the image to be figuretive, though stylized, ends up becoming a triangle astract. The triangle in the bottom engraved with the typical sins of the berber language primitive; one on the left becomes a lacy pierced by a series af triangles, could evoke both Tanit that the hand of Fatima.

  • Actually Tanit is present in much more jewels in abstract shapes all over north africa and the connection with the hand is also strong since punic times....the khamsa/hand of fatima later devlopment is no more that a cultural/religious shift or varnish to keep the idol alive in a pure monotheistic environment
