This material looks a bit like the thin black shawls with silver yarn patterns that came (I think) from the south of Egypt (Aswan?). May be Carry will know.
Harald, I believe that it is referred to as "assuit"; it was very popular in Europe and the US in the 1920-30's, the flapper era!
this and the gold dress are the same as the shawls so where those were made these were made but for which group I don't know. There are few original ethnic dresses like this around. These are the only ones I have ever seen or handled.
You are right Hillary, now I remember, I saw those shawls but never the dresses.
Is it possible that they were made in Assuit (upper Egypt)?
i remember when i was young and was watching old egyptian movies. these were worn by fallahine women from middle upper egypt. Not the delta and not Aswan. Assiut is very much likely
Beautiful
