Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

Headcover- Rashaida-Saudi Arabia

This is an extraordinary, rare beauty. The pink-salmon color is very unique. In addition to the elaborate silver bead embroidery, it features as well some glass embroidery and colorful weaving... Very special! Same as the other Rashaida head covers, it is very heavy, due to the silver embroidery.
The seller had another, similar one but not in such a good condition as this piece...

Dear Thelma; Many thanks for your comments. Yes, the antique Rashaideh fabrics are usually having silver beads embroidered. I have simpler ones, which have however, still silver beaded frames. They use also glass beads, weavings, shells, etc.. I have a very old child head cover, a true museum piece, which is beautifully embroidered with silver beads, featuring however also crosses at the back, which have been filled with silver and gold mesh - very unusual. With kind regards. Peter

Dear Peter, this is very special. I wasn't able to see the beads at first - until I used the Full Size button. Are all the Rashaida head covers embroidered in beads...not just stitches as in other embroidery?  Very beautiful.
