  • These are fascinating, but to me they do not look particularly flattering. I still fail to understand the exact function. Intriguing all the same . And yes, a lovely picture!

  • Thank you very much for your comments. I agree that this kind of pieces are not particularly appealing regardless of its ethnographic or cultural value. It must have also been quite uncomfortable to wear it scratching the poor lady's forehead or nose!. It seems its purpose was to hold up the strings that were tied at the back of the head to keep the veil to burq' in place (see Azza Fahmy's "Enchanted Jewellery of Egypt).
