Sweet box Hillary.
I can see the first letters of the city of "fes" the rest is worn along with date. Usually on these pieces there is a third hllamrk on top of lid around the additional bail (to attach the chain itself securing the closing pin). This hallmark if exisiting is usually the least worn and you can read the date.

Yes; Alaa's remark is important as the first two letters of Fes ' FA in Arabic ' are clear which confirms that the box has been crafted in Fes.

What a truly splendid piece. Congrats! I have been away from the site and other things for a while, and it is wonderful to see this just about as the first image! This is full of style and dignity - really most satisfying.
Thank you for the comments! I had originally planned to make this one into a necklace, but alas, I think it is too big and rather we will look for a new owner. I love the fact that it is decorated all over, even the bottom!
It's a beautiful piece on its own, Hillary, and I am sure it will find a new owner without much trouble! Alas, Truus and I are beginning to feel too old to continue buying, and have largely stopped doing so. But there are certainly other people who don't collect ethnic jewellery with the (primary or secondary) intention of wearing it. This is a significant work of art, as many would agree.
