This is a beautiful antique, from the 19th century, high grade silver round tubular amulet pendant container from south India. It is ornamented with a central Makara or Kitimukha, mythical aquatic monster connected to the fertility of the water, source of life, flanked by birds and bands of floral creepers. The box unscrews at one end for the insertion of magical protective objects and “mantras” on sheets of metal or paper. This item is for Sale

  • Hi Zhanna,  Thank you for your comments.  Lovely to hear from you again.

  • Dear Jasmine, a beautiful piece which looks very solid and imposing. How much does it weigh? Do you know who might wear this ... a bride, for instance?

  • Dear Thelma,  Thank you for your comments.  There is a very similar amulet box listed on Page 127, Traditional Jewelry of India, Oppi Untracht on a chain.  The dimensions for my amulet box are: Height: 5.5cm (2 1/4") including Bale , Width: 12.5cm (4 3/4" ),  Weight: 106 Grams (3.74 oz.).  This amulet box could possibly have been a central unit in a marriage necklace.  I have uploaded another photo to show how the box unscrews at one end for the insertion of protective objects. Regards, Jasmineium
