Ethnic Jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

I found these at the flea market here in Jakarta, and was very attracted to the bright yellow color and fun shape. I have seen similar ones for sale in other antique stores here in Java. Can anyone tell me more about them? I have been told that they are around 100 years old, and alternately told that they are either Chinese or Javanese.

Thanks Sarah! Well, they were very cheap, so I am not disappointed that they are newish. There are lots of pretty beads in the markets here, and I think a lot of them are probably local, but it is so difficult to know for sure. Someone offered me another strand of larger beads with a similar shape that appeared to be hand blown. They were very attractive but the asking price was $850!!! I thought that was a crazy price. I think these are pressed in a mold, but they were only $20.

These appear to be fairly new glass beads from Indonesia, I had blue and red ones in the past. They are made in a few sizes.
