Comment by Joost Daalder on July 23, 2012 at 13:07 Hi LInda, - Of the amber pieces you are showing pretty much at the same time, I find this the most interesting and also very pleasing - partly because the beads are so beaufully arranged and built into a unified necklace. (I see that matter the way ayis does.)
Comment by Toya on July 21, 2012 at 17:29 Interesting points, Linda. It is all about what we value. I would take an antique amber necklace over shoes and handbags any day.
Comment by Linda Pastorino on July 21, 2012 at 15:25 Hi I think there are plenty who can afford it but they don't have the inclination to buy it and or just are not exposed to it. Think of the prices of some shoes and or handbags and thnk of the types of people who are paying millions for houses seven figure millions. A small normal Chanel bag is upwards of 5,000 dollars and most cloths are in that realm of designer material not to mention coutour. There is money out there here in States and in Europe and people do buy them here but not easily becaise tjeu jave no gage for evaluation and or it is not the fashion to do so right now. When things hit fashion magazines as they sometimes do, then that crowd buys. The fashion for them is hit or miss depending on trend. People that love them usualy are not able to easily purchase them and that includes myself. I'm glad I got mine when I did years ago and even then they were always expensive. I also rarely see amber being purchaed by Chinese or Emmerates? I thought they usually buy only gold and fancy Central Asian jewelry. Maybe Singapore only, not mainland. Taste is so different and they come to buy other things that were used by usually the upper classes or royalty only.
The only way to find these now is to get them from older collections as i did with these. All of us baby boomers and 60's generation have these as we loved them, traveled to these places and use them.
Comment by Marie-Ange on July 21, 2012 at 10:57 I must agree with Ayis, it always breaks my heart to see people break up beautiful originals to sell loose beads, I even refuse to buy loose beads for that reason, also loose beads are much more expensive than you would pay for a complete necklace. Also you would never be able to create such a lovely necklace as this one only buying loose beads.
Yes Linda has the most beautiful collection I ever saw!!
You are absolutely right Ayis -as far as ethnography is concerned- but..............its the only way some of us can afford amber or amazonites (i.e. buy them little by little , months by months., a few at a times.....).
I think that only the Chinese market now and the Emirates people can afford the whole thing!
Comment by ayis on July 21, 2012 at 3:07 stunning.
It is a pity that the overwhelming majority of amber, coral, amazonite......beads do reach the market loosely and not in their original strings and setting like this wonderful necklace.
We lose a precious ethnographic material that way...
Linda your collection is jaw breaking as always. But then years of hard work deserves the finest items!
Comment by Linda Pastorino on July 20, 2012 at 1:07 Hi that makes sense. I have seen them in photos. these are done to use them so people like us buy them...
Comment by SARAH CORBETT on July 19, 2012 at 23:06 This type of bead is called cross drilled and is worn in the hair by Fulani women and some guedra dancers too.

Comment by Linda Pastorino on July 19, 2012 at 22:07 HI, the cord is sewn in and is attached. Interesting design.
Comment by Linda Pastorino on July 19, 2012 at 22:06 Hi Harold I'm not sure as I have packed it aleady for my show. I had it and wrapped it, and now it's being shipped out. I would say it does because the orientation of the leather is also sewn on and that gors through holes on the side as well there are holes in the middle which it is strung through.
