Addarre Nobility in their refinery,Harrar Town, Ethiopia

These are 2 nobility ladies of the town Harrar and they go dressed on holidays and feasts in heavy silk dresses (drak colors) velvet with cuffs embroidered trousers (loads of linnen underneath in order to enhance their (popons),my Addarre friends were not allowed to run to had to walk majisticly. Part of their amber jewellery is to be seen on the next photo.This photo was copied from Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher's second book "African Ark"

    Yes Ait, it can  be a colorful silk  or for the not so wealthy it will be thin colorful cotton.

    @Eva: The book is absolutely worthwhile having! You'll love it.

    @Rabah: Yes, I think these are Indian silk Saris. Indian textiles are quite popular in the Horn. In Eritrea some ethnic groups (e.g. the Saho) are wearing a particular Indian cotton print in a variety of colours as their tradtional costume. Will post a picture when I have some more time...
