An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment
A friend who lives in Tunis wears traditional garb for a wedding in Matamata. Her "houlie" is fastened with gilt silver "khlal" fibulae, and she is wearing a rihanna. A lace shirt is typically worn under the houlie. Although nowadays imported machine-made fabric is used, there are some Tunisian women who still tat lace fabric by hand.

Comment by Edith D on April 25, 2012 at 12:37 I have posted another example of these filigree fibulae with real coins. Usually the coins are imitation, but sometimes one finds vintage examples with real coins. The George V coins were once very popular in Tunisia because they were Sterling silver until the year 1919.
Comment by Edith D on April 20, 2012 at 19:23 Thanks Eva! Probably the same word!
@It is strange, now I remember it all - this sort of dress (to be seen on the photo of me in Timbuktu which I just loaded on the site) - is called Howli by the Moorish people in Timbuktu, and Tungu by the Sonrai.
very nice photo, also the one below showing details. I am surprised to read about her "houlie", because in Timbuktu the Moorish women also name their dress (which is a big piece of tissue worn around the body and finally around the head, is called "Howli" - seems to be the same word! )

Would love to know more about these fibulas, it seems as if they are newly made, and or anew fashion ( filgree with coins..)
