ethnic jewels

An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

Hi everyone,

I'll be in London for a week at the end of the month and was considering going to Portobello and/or Camden markets. Are there any ethnic jewellery at all in the antiques' stalls? Or shall I give those a miss?

Any other suggestions for jewellery shopping (ethnic and old)?

Thanks!

Wow Chantal, this list of treasures makes me want to hop on a plane and go along too!

You are welcome to come to visit me if you have the time x  for dinner! not shopping!!!!

Chantal, there's no way I'm missing either of them now :) Thank you so much for the advice!

Sarah, thank you for the invitation but as I only have a week, I will be in London at the time. Looking forward to spending time with you in Morocco though :)

Toya, let me know if you hop on that plane. We could trawl the markets together :)

Thanks again Chantal for the advice. I didn't have a lot of time to shop in London, and decided to spend part of a morning at the Bermondsey antique market and a few hours at Portobello.

The Bermondsey market was quite small with about 20 or so stalls, although I'm not sure if that was because most of the dealers were on holiday. One of the sellers had an amazing stash of ethnic jewellery, including a pair of Burmese ear plugs and loads of east Asian (China, Mongolia, India) jewellery. I purchased the pair of bracelets listed at http://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/south-indian-filigree-bracelets?... for 110 pounds and the earrings posted at http://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/european-or-asian?xg_source=acti... for 150. I would have purchased a couple of other pieces, but the seller took only cash and I wasn't organized enough for that.

She also gave me a couple of suggestions for ethnic jewellery sellers at Portobello, but again most of them were on holiday. Once again, only cash transactions. I also had limited time and only found http://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/ear-plug-with-glass?xg_source=ac... for 18 pounds.

Hope this is useful for someone else planning to visit London.
