An appreciation of ethnic jewellery and adornment

HI all,

here is a necklace wich i am almost sure is from Egypt.

I presume it belongs to the same category of the necklaces called "Kirdan" but unlike the one i have already posted it has a different feel to it especially regarding the central element wich is very strange

Any thoughts abou the exact origin, use of this necklace?

Cheers

PS: Here is one necklace i posted wich is very common

Hi Ayis,

This is an interesting piece which is almost certainly assembled. It is indeed from Egypt, but the central element is used to decorate horses' gear and is not found in jewelry for humans. This decoration would have hung from more sturdy chainwork as yours is now hanging from, so I suspect the central element to have been detached from its original composition and reworked into a human kirdan. Usually it is made of very good silver; I have one of these crescents which is 925 sterling silver. Pictures of animal decoration can be found in Azza Fahmy's Enchanted Jewelry of Egypt, where your crescent element is also pictured on an original assembly.

Thank you Sigrid,

I also suspected some reassembling .

Cheers
